Current drive at plasma densities required for thermonuclear reactors.

چکیده
Progress in thermonuclear fusion energy research based on deuterium plasmas magnetically confined in toroidal tokamak devices requires the development of efficient current drive methods. Previous experiments have shown that plasma current can be driven effectively by externally launched radio frequency power coupled to lower hybrid plasma waves. However, at the high plasma densities required for fusion power plants, the coupled radio frequency power does not penetrate into the plasma core, possibly because of strong wave interactions with the plasma edge. Here we show experiments performed on FTU (Frascati Tokamak Upgrade) based on theoretical predictions that nonlinear interactions diminish when the peripheral plasma electron temperature is high, allowing significant wave penetration at high density. The results show that the coupled radio frequency power can penetrate into high-density plasmas due to weaker plasma edge effects, thus extending the effective range of lower hybrid current drive towards the domain relevant for fusion reactors.

Lower hybrid current drive at densities required for thermonuclear reactors
For the progress of the thermonuclear fusion energy research based on the tokamak concept, it is essential to drive current non-inductively in high-density plasmas for producing steady state, thermally well insulated, stable and large volume plasmas. ITER (International Tokamak Experiment Reactor), as an example, will have relatively high densities at the periphery of the plasma column (ne_0.8 ...
متن کاملImpact of plasma, magnet and wall performances on tokamak and helical reactor economics
For the assessment of both tokamak and helical reactors, the base case reactor models are introduced, and parameter scan analyses on plasma beta, electric power output, maximum magnetic field strength and neutron wall loading are carried out. The assessment shows that high temperature operation is appropriate in tokamak reactors to increase bootstrap current fraction and current-drive (CD) effi...

Stars are gravitationally stabilized fusion reactors changing their chemical composition while transforming light atomic nuclei into heavy ones. The atomic nuclei are supposed to be in thermal equilibrium with the ambient plasma. The majority of reactions among nuclei leading to a nuclear transformation are inhibited by the necessity for the charged participants to tunnel through their mutual C...

Recent experiments on the spherical tokamak have discovered the conditions to create a powerful plasma and ensure easy shaping and amplification of stability, high bootstrap current and confinement energy. The spherical tours (ST) fusion energy development path is complementary to the tokamak burning plasma experiment such as NSTX and higher toroidal beta regimes and improves the design of a po...
متن کاملA Design Procedure for a Slotted Waveguide With Probe - Fed Slots Radiating into Plasma
A design procedure is developed for slotted-waveguide antennas with probe-fed slots. Radiation into a gyrotropic, plane-stratified medium is considered, nonzero waveguide wall thickness is assumed, and noncosinusoidal slot fields and arbitrary slot length up to about one free-space wavelength are allowed. External mutual coupling is taken into account by matching the tangential fields at the an...
